What we do
Sound Write Program
The Sound Write Program is a structured synthetic program based on the science of reading. It is a multi-sensory, code-oriented and comprehensive approach to literacy.
There are 7 Units in the Sound Write program and each unit focuses on developing phonemic awareness, which is the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in spoken words. The approach is designed to help children connect sounds with their written representations more effectively, promoting literacy and spelling skills.
The Sound Write approach is helpful for early readers and spellers and children with learning disabilities such as intellectual disabilities and dyslexia. It builds a solid foundation of how speech sounds and written words are connected. By practicing sound segmentation, symbol recognition, and blending, students become more confident readers and writers.
What can it help with
Reading and Writing
The Sound Write clinician will assess the current level of reading ability and then create a tailored program for each client. We offer this program one-on-one with a clinician. Small group programs of two children to one clinician can be offered if there are two children at a similar reading level.
Sound Segmentation
Students break words down into individual sounds (phonemes). For example, the word "cat" would be broken into three sounds: /k/, /æ/, and /t/.
Sound-to-Symbol Correspondence
After segmenting the sounds, students learn the letters or letter combinations (graphemes) that correspond to those sounds. In the case of "cat," the sounds /k/, /æ/, and /t/ are represented by the letters "c," "a," and "t.
Blending
After identifying the sounds and the corresponding letters, students blend them back together to form words. This process is called "blending," and it helps in spelling and reading.
Pattern Recognition
As students advance, they start recognizing patterns in words, such as common letter combinations (like "sh," "ch," or "oo") or rules (like silent letters). This helps them improve both their spelling and decoding abilities.
Application
Students are encouraged to apply these skills to read and write unfamiliar words, promoting independent literacy skills.
